When the countdown to your wedding begins, it can be a very hectic time. In those last few days, it can seem like there is so much to do and so little time in which to do it. These are the top 10 things to get done the week of your wedding, in no particular order.
One: Get a manicure and a pedicure. The Thursday or Friday before a Saturday wedding is the ideal timing for this. Splurge on a paraffin manicure so that your hands will be silky soft for your wedding. Then go get your engagement ring cleaned at a nearby jewelry store to make it extra sparkly for your ceremony.
Two: Make sure you have all of the little details you need for your wedding, such as the ring bearer pillow, garter (if using), and the guest book and pen. Do you have thank you gifts ready like bridesmaid jewelry, groomsmen gifts, and a little something for the parents of the bride and groom? If not, get them now.
Three: Pick up your wedding gown from the bridal shop after final alterations. It should be perfectly pressed, so do not plan to try it on unless there is a reason for concern about fit. You would think that picking up your wedding dress would go without saying, but I once knew a bride who flew halfway across the country before realizing she had neglected to pick up her gown (a friend came for it and brought it to her wedding at the last minute).
Four: Finalize the seating chart. In many cases, this cannot be done prior to the wedding week, since not all of the responses are in. No one relishes this task, but it is an important one to spend the time to do with careful thought.
Five: Rehearse! The rehearsal for the wedding ceremony is typically held the afternoon before the main event. To make your rehearsal run as smoothly as possible, sit down beforehand and decide in which order you would like to have your bridesmaids line up, and which groomsman and bridesmaid will be paired together during the recessional.
Six: Have a rehearsal dinner or wedding welcome party. This usually takes place the night before the wedding. The rehearsal dinner traditionally includes immediate family, the wedding party and their spouses, and special out-of-town guests. The wedding welcome party is a larger affair open to all out of town guests and family, and has become increasingly popular in recent years.
Seven: Show your appreciation for your attendants with a bridesmaids’ luncheon. This special lunch is held a couple of days before the wedding, and is generally quite small. The guest list is made up of the bride, her mother, the groom’s mother, any sisters the bride or groom may have, and the bridesmaids and flower girls. The luncheon is a chance to thank your friends for being in your wedding and to present the bridesmaid jewelry gifts.
Eight: Confirm all plans with vendors. A few quick phone calls early in the week will ensure that there are no last minute surprises come wedding day.
Nine: Pack for your honeymoon. If you plan to change into a going away outfit at the end of your reception, also get that squared away. Take a look at your fiance’s packing to make sure he has not left anything out (like his passport!).
Ten: Assemble the wedding programs and wrap the favors (if not already done). These are the last minute chores that always end up taking way longer than anticipated, so do them early in the wedding week. Never ever leave the program assembly until the night before your wedding!
With such long a list, this last tip may seem impossible, but be sure to get plenty of sleep in the days leading up to your wedding. They don’t call it beauty sleep for nothing, after all, and you want to have that famous bridal radiance on your big day.
